Shirley Powell remembered for decades of civic leadership in Guthrie

Shirley Jean (Cahill) Powell, a longtime community leader whose civic involvement helped shape Guthrie for decades, passed away Monday at the age of 90.

A proud graduate of Guthrie High School, Powell built a life centered on service, leadership, and community engagement. She was deeply involved in numerous local organizations, dedicating her time and energy to causes that strengthened Guthrie’s civic and cultural fabric.

Powell served as president of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce Auxiliary and played an active role in the Guthrie 89ers Celebration committee, helping support one of the city’s most recognized traditions. She was also a leader in youth development, volunteering as both a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader for many years.

Her leadership extended into some of Guthrie’s most prominent civic and social organizations. Powell served as chairman of the Territorial Christmas Ball, president of the Jonquil Garden Club, and maintained a 50-year membership with Chapter AD PEO, reflecting her long-standing commitment to community service and fellowship.

Beyond civic organizations, Powell made a lasting mark on Guthrie’s arts community. She owned and operated the Kaleidoscope Gallery, where she hosted fine arts shows featuring Southwest and Native American artists, helping bring cultural enrichment to the area.

Powell also worked alongside her husband, Bob, in operating the Melba and Beacon Theatres, further cementing her connection to some of Guthrie’s most iconic institutions.

She will be remembered not only for her leadership roles but for her willingness to give her time, talents, and heart to the community she called home.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, April 3, at 1 p.m. at First Christian Church. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home.
