For the second straight week, the Guthrie Bluejays outscored their opponent in the second half, but once again it was a slow first half start in week two.
Shawnee got four touchdown receptions from sophomore Scott Cawvey in the first half to give the Wolves a 27-0 halftime lead. The scores held to be good with Shawnee clipping the Jays 27-13.
In the two losses to Enid and Shawnee, the Jays have been outscored 55-3 in the first two quarters, but in the second half Guthrie has outscored their opponents 33-6.
“These kids are working hard. We’re going to put four good quarters together and when we do we’re going to be scary,” Jays head coach Kelly Beeby said in his post-game radio interview.
For the first time since 2009, the Jays have dropped their first two games to begin a season.
Cawvey hauled in first half touchdown scores of 56, 50, 40 and 10 yards and finished the night with seven catches for 185 yards.
The Guthrie offense struggled to get going and was held to 189 yards of offense while committing four turnovers, including on their first two offensive possessions.
Despite the low offensive output, the Jays out-rushed Shawnee 146 to 120 yards.
Guthrie (0-2) got on the board late in the third quarter when quarterback Jackson Waddell spotted Gabe Gonzalez in the back of the south end zone for an 8-yard score. Waddell added the second score late in the fourth quarter with a 5-yard run.
Waddell finished the night with 20 carries for 63 yards.
Guthrie returns back to Jelsma on Friday when they host Ponca City, who was taken down by Enid (2-0) at home 61-34 on Friday night.
