For the first time in a decade, voters approved a school bond for Guthrie Public Schools. The $16.2 million bond issue passed with the largest approval for the district since 1977. Previously, the school district had failed seven consecutive bond elections, including six months ago.
“I’m overjoyed at the outcome as our community put our students first,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said in a statement. “It is truly humbling to think how much work has gone into this effort.”
The proposition required a super-majority (60 percent), but superseded that by earning 3,044 yes votes against 919 no votes (76.81% – 23.19%).
14 of the 15 precincts were approved with a minimum of 65 percent. Majority of the precincts passed with percentages in the mid to upper 70’s.
Of the 12,551 registered voters in the school district, 31.5 percent of the voters exercised their right to vote.
The three bond series will first address roof, window and exterior issues at Central, Fogarty and Guthrie Upper Elementary schools. The second series will build a brand new school in the district’s southern edge (Douglass Blvd. and Charter Oak). The final series will address issues at the junior high, heating and air units at the high school and district wide technology. “We also don’t take the trust shown by the community lightly,” Simpson said. “Tomorrow, a new phase begins where we have an obligation to the community to show the trust we earned was deserved. Until then, it is time to celebrate success and show gratitude to everyone that supported our children today. In the end our kids won.”
