Guthrie High School’s Clay Tarter was named the 2010 Oklahoma Coaches Association Cross Country Coach of the Year last week, in Tulsa, during the annual OCA Coaches Clinic.
This past season Tarter led the Guthrie boys cross country team to an undefeated season including the Class 5A State Championship. In addition to the cross country title, Tarter also help lead the Jays track and field team to back-to-back state title’s.
The GHS Hall of Fame coach was selected as a nominee in Region I before being selected by a board for the top honor. Along with recognition, Tarter received a ring for the accomplishment.
This marks the second time Tarter has won the OCA award. Although he can not recall which year he won the OCA award, many would assume it was either 1982, 1983, or 1984. Those years the boys won state title’s
In June, Tarter was a finalist for the National Coach of the Year in Boys Cross Country. He was one of 10 finalist and was honored in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Tarter, who was instrumental in starting the cross country program at GHS, has coached seven state championship teams (six boys) which ranks him at the top of all time in Guthrie history, 14 state runner-up teams, and has had four athlete’s finish state champions.
