Cates signed with Oklahoma Baptist University Thursday morning at Guthrie High School surrounded by Amber Given along with his Guthrie track coaches (Mike Longstreth, Matt Perring, Dietrich Hayes, Gary Boxley, and Clay Tarter) and OBU assistant coach Zach Johnson.

Cates will join 2010 Guthrie alum Jason Ogan on the Bison roster.

This past season, OBU sent two runners to the NAIA Cross Country Championships in Fort Vancouver, Washington.

OBU is coached by Ford Mastin, who is a four-time NAIA National Coach of the Year since starting with the Bison in 1996.

Cates helped propel the Jays to both the 2009 and 2010 state championships in cross country and track. In his final cross country run he finished second overall at the state meet with a time of 16:26.60 and was 12 seconds behind the overall winner Taler Buck of Deer Creek. Cates struck gold when his team won the 4 x 800 relay at the 2011 state track meet.
