Three businesses sell beer to minor in compliance checks

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office conducted an alcohol compliance check on Friday night by stopping by 11 businesses. Of those 11, three sold low-point beer to a teenager.

The checks were done between 7 – 11 p.m. with a teenager who was given an age perception test from the public before the check. That teen’s perceived age was 17-18 years old.

The volunteer walked into the businesses with “buy money” and for their safety was joined by an undercover agent.

The Sheriff’s Office reports Marc’s Short Stop, Waterloo Corner and The Jungle each sold beer to the teen. Meanwhile, Railhead BBQ, Dollar General (Waterloo and Midwest), Petty Pit Stop, Tony’s Quick Stop, Mac’s Corner (Waterloo and Sooner), IB’s, Walgreens and AJ’s refused the sale.

This past June, 17 businesses were checked with only one selling to a teen. A year ago during checks, four of the 24 business sold.

“We’re proud of the locations that remembered to check the ID’s to verify the true age of the buyer,” Sgt. Marcus Williams with the Sheriff’s Office said. “It’s very important that we remember to do this to lessen the chances of our youth consuming alcohol.”

Sgt. Williams said two of the clerks sold to the teen while standing next to an ‘UNDER 21 WE ID’ sign with the date and age to purchase.

Summons were issued to the clerks or servers who sold and will appear in Logan County District Court on September 14.
