It has become a staple on the Oklahoma High School cross country schedule come late August. This season the run will mark the 14th year of running in the flats.
The TIG Guthrie Cottonwood Flats Invitational will run this Saturday morning with not only high school athletes, but junior high athletes and for the first time adults will have a chance to get to run the course. The adult 5k race will begin at 7:30 a.m. The cost for adults is $5.
The event picked up a title sponsor with TIG, also known as Terra Insure Group. TIG, located on 2403 S. Division Street, is an independent insurance agency specializing in all personal and commercial lines of insurance. For more on TIG visit their website.
Guthrie head coach Clay Tarter says he expects some good teams once again this year to compete, including his two-time defending 5A state champion BlueJay squad.
The Jays will be led by three members of the two previous state championship teams with Jonathan Ogan, Hunter Sallee and Walker Cross.
In last years state-run, Ogan and Sallee were named to the All-State team with fourth and seventh places respectively. Cross just missed out on the recognition by placing one spot out in 11th place.
Guthrie will rely on Evan Watts and Taylor Self this season to try to make it a three-peat performance as the fourth and fifth runners. Self is the only junior member with the others in their senior campaigns.
Tarter feels his team can make a run at the title again, but was quick to mention Deer Creek and Tahlequah will bring tough competition.
The 5A field got a touch lighter with Bishop Kelley and Bishop McGuinness moving up to Class 6A this season.
