Town of Langston observes 9/11 day of service and remembrance

In observance of the 15th Anniversary of September 11, 2001, the Town of Langston City, Salters Chapel AME Church, the March of Dimes (Oklahoma Central Region), Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and other community organizations will host “A Day of Service and Remembrance.”

The event is open to the general public and will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2016 from 3 – 6 p.m. at the Salters Chapel AME Church, 119 Washington Street, in Langston.

The theme for the program will be “Bringing Healthy Babies into Healthier Communities.” This event will include:

Recognition of and prayers for those who died and were injured in the 9/11 attacks. Local Volunteer Fire Fighters and Law Enforcement officers are invited to join the Langston VFD and Police Officers to represent the Fallen First Respondents who gave their all or who were injured as a result of the 9/11 attacks.

Prayers for the future of our Nation will be given as we also ask for Blessings of our Babies. Later in the program, the youngest baby in attendance will be presented with a gift basket from the Stork’s Nest.

The first public announcement of the “Healthy Living Initiative” to be expanded in the Langston Community will be made.  We will recognize the participating churches and organizations who will be the new participants in this Initiative.  At the same time, we will show our appreciation to the Logan County Department of Health for their help in building healthier communities.

Grand Opening ceremonies will be held for the Stork’s Nest, a national educational and referral program co-sponsored by the March of Dimes and the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Expectant parents can attend prenatal classes, make behavior and lifestyle changes and earn incentive points towards layette and nursery furniture.  The goal is to work to decrease the number of premature births and stillbirths especially in minority, low income and rural communities.

The Stork’s Nest stresses the importance of early and regular prenatal care, and well-baby immunizations and health care, offers culturally sensitive prenatal educational classes and encourages a variety of healthy-pregnancy/new born activities. Women join a Stork’s Nest after being referred by a health care provider or a social services program. Women earn points for healthy pregnancy and well-baby activities and redeem these points for maternity and baby care items. Dads are also welcome to participate in all Stork’s Nest sessions. The new Langston City/Logan County Stork’s Nest normally holds classes twice a month.  A place for other children to play and healthy snacks and beverages will be provided. Contact the new Stork’s Nest at langstonsstorknest@yahoo.com.

A Sunday Afternoon Tea will be provided while guests visit the Stork’s Nest and learn about the registration process and the educational objectives. At the same time, guests will be able to present their donations or gifts to the Stork’s Nest. All guests are requested to bring incentive items to stock the Stork’s Nest including: disposable diapers, wipes, new baby clothes for boys and girls (sizes NB-2T) books, toys, bottles, nipples, rattlers, pacifiers, etc. and financial donations to help purchase larger items such as cribs, strollers, high chairs, etc.  Gifts are tax deductible.

Throughout the program, patriotic and gospel music will be provided by several outstanding soloists from Langston and surrounding communities.  Community members who wish to perform a relevant and appropriate spoken word piece should contact the organizers no later than September 9th.

This event is open to the public. For further information or to request a spot on this program, please call 405-410-1303.
