After America celebrated Veterans Day a week ago, a Guthrie family celebrated again on Monday when Msgt. Scot Vaughan returned home from Afghanistan. His two children had no idea daddy was coming home until he walked into their school.
Vaughan and his Tulsa Air National Guard 138th Fighter Wing returned to the Tulsa airport at 2:30 a.m. After being picked up from his wife, Diane, it was back to Guthrie and let Mary and Maddox know of his arrival back to the state.
A special assembly was conducted at Central Elementary and it just happen to be Mary Maddox, a first-grader, was near the front. She had no idea who would be walking through the door.
After a brief glance and a reassurance, Mary waved her hand and dashed toward her dad’s arm as the entire school took in the surprise. As the two embraced, the student body broke out with the singing of You’re Grand Old Flag.
Afterwards, it was time to head to Carmen Brown’s kindergarten class and pay Maddox a visit.
Brown alerted the students they had a special surprise in the hallway and moments later as students quietly awaited, you heard “daddy!” from Madox before his dad even step a foot in the classroom.
Much like his older sister, Maddox darted for his dad’s arms and needed several moments to release his grip from his dad’s neck.
Everytime I see stories like this it brings tears of joy to me. Such a great story!
