For the first time in a decade, both the girls and boys cross country teams from Guthrie High School competed in the Oklahoma Cross Country State Championships.
With strong performances last week during regionals, the cross country teams competed Saturday afternoon at Edmond Santa Fe for the Class 5A run.
The Lady Jays, who finished as regional runner-ups, captured fifth place overall and claimed an All-State runner.
The sophomore duo of Mercy Dement and Tori Wells took the medal stand as two of the best in 5A.
Dement finished eighth place overall with a time of 20:16 and Wells coming in 14th place with a time of 20:35 in the 5k race.
A season ago, Dement finished 26th overall as a freshmen.
Claremore’s sophomore runner, Laynie Nichols, captured her second straight title with a time of 19:30.
Next to cross for the Lady Jays were junior Allie Guggisberg, sophomore Sierra Warner, junior Lauryn Downs and junior Denae Davenport.
For the Bluejays, they finished in the middle of the pack with an eighth place finish.
Once again, leading the way for the Jays was Trevor Sallee. The sophomore just missed the top 15 and back-to-back medals at state with an 18th place finish.
Sophomroe JD Coonfeld, senior Rodrigo Solis, sophomore Loren Husky, sophomore Harley Cunniff, freshmen Ethen Long and sophomore Pheonix Braswell rounded out the field for the Bluejays.
“I am so proud of all my runners,” first year head coach James Strahorn said.
“This was the first time in 10 years both Guthrie cross country teams made state in the same year. I couldn’t have done it without the guidance of my mentor coach Clay Tarter.”
