Video: Guthrie Golf claims 5A State Championship

After sophomore Luke Morgan walked off from hole 54 of the Class 5A state golf tournament, he quickly began adding up his score. Soon after, smiles and high fives were being dished out as the Guthrie Bluejays knew they were about to hoist the state championship trophy.

Despite their largest team score coming on the final 18 holes, the Jays claimed the Class 5A title for the first time since 1998.

“Pretty incredible,” head coach Ric Meshew said behind hole 18 of Cimarron Trails in Perkins.

“These guys played so great. Everyone of them contributed.”

Guthrie, who returns everyone for next season, was eight shots better than defending state champion Bishop McGuinness and 19 shots ahead of a veteran team in Bishop Kelley.

Freshmen Brady Hirzel, playing as the Jays fifth bag, scored low rounds (78 and 81) for the Jays on Monday to help aid a four shot lead following 36 holes.

On Tuesday, Bo Robbins (78), Luke Dale (79) and Luke Roach (80) proved to be solid over their Irish competitors to increase the leader board lead.

“It was a tough day today with the wind,” Robbins said. “We were up four trying to keep the lead all day and we all just gutted it out and came out on top.”

Sophomore stand-out Luke Morgan entered the day with a three shot lead for the individual title, but managed an 85 in the final round. Despite his final 18 holes, Morgan claimed another All-State season with a third place finish. A season ago he finished as the 5A runner-up.

“It’s a big deal,” Morgan said on winning the team title. “Not very many people get to do it.”

Morgan finished with a three round total of 226 and was followed up with Robbins shooting a 244, Hirzel 248 and both Dale and Roach finishing with scores of 252.

“I knew these guys would do what they needed to do and get it done and they did,” Meshew said, who has now been apart of eight state championships at Guthrie High School.
