Guthrie Public Schools and Foundation Insurance are teaming up to find the school district’s student of the month. On Monday evening the first winner was announced at the Board of Education meeting.
Blake Wimsey with Foundation Insurance introduced Cesar Guzman-Alvarado, a seventh grade student at Guthrie Junior High School (GJHS), as the first winner.
“This is a new award we are starting this month,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said after speaking with Wimsey over the Christmas break. “We established a criteria and a process for the selection of the student of the month.”
Although there are no specific grade requirements, the student must be in good-standing in the classroom to be eligible. Overall, the district says they are searching for students who go above and beyond in the way they treat their peers and teachers.
GJHS reading teacher Ron Gillett, who nominated Cesar, says the character trait that best describes Guzman-Alvarado is patience.
“He possess so many admirable characteristics. He is humble, kind and generous. Cesar enters the class with a smile and exits the class with a smile,” Gillett said.
Gillett pointed out that Cesar generously offers paper and pencils for those students that are in need.
While Cesar is at the top of his classroom academics, Gillett says his character is what shines.
“You are one of the greatest, your peers and teachers know your name, in the future you will move mountains, you are already in the team humility hall of fame,” Gillett said.
Wimsey congratulated Cesar and presented him with a $65 gift certificate to Stacy’s Place.
