Watch: Guthrie native drills field goal on ESPN’s College GameDay

Guthrie native John Machtolff is interviewed by ESPN's Pat Mcafee with ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit watching on.

A Guthrie native made a national splash this weekend when he nailed a 33-yard field goal on ESPN’s College GameDay as part of Pat McAfee’s weekly Kicking Contest.

Texas Tech student John Machtolff, who grew up in Guthrie before moving to Texas, successfully kicked his second barefoot field goal on the popular college football show—this time earning a potential $250,000 prize for himself and another $250,000 for a Lubbock charity. Machtolff, who plans to attend dental school, said he hopes to use the winnings to help fund his education.

Pat McAfee’s Kicking Contest has quickly become one of the most talked-about moments of each College GameDay broadcast. Every week, a college student is selected to attempt a field goal live on national television for a chance to win big money, with the show’s electric atmosphere and unpredictable outcomes drawing millions of viewers.

This week’s edition, filmed live in Lubbock ahead of Texas Tech’s game, saw the Guthrie native calmly line up and boot the kick—barefoot—for the second time on the show, thrilling both the on-site crowd and the panel of hosts.

Machtolff’s success and hometown connection sparked excitement back home in Guthrie, where family and friends were tuned in to cheer him on.
