A Guthrie native made a national splash this weekend when he nailed a 33-yard field goal on ESPN’s College GameDay as part of Pat McAfee’s weekly Kicking Contest.
Texas Tech student John Machtolff, who grew up in Guthrie before moving to Texas, successfully kicked his second barefoot field goal on the popular college football show—this time earning a potential $250,000 prize for himself and another $250,000 for a Lubbock charity. Machtolff, who plans to attend dental school, said he hopes to use the winnings to help fund his education.

Every week, a college student is selected to attempt a field goal live on national television for a chance to win big money, with the show’s electric atmosphere and unpredictable outcomes drawing millions of viewers.
