Despite Mother Nature playing a role in the construction of the new elementary school for Guthrie Public Schools, Charter Oak Elementary remains on schedule to open at the beginning of next year’s school year.
According to the Mesonet, Guthrie collected 3.95 inches of rain in the month of August, but the location of the gauge is approximately 10 miles from the location of the school (Charter Oak Road and Douglas Blvd.), which saw more rainfall throughout the month.
The official 3.95 inch reading for August marks the seventh highest amount since 1994.
“We have been severely hampered by a very wet summer,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said. “Normally, you wouldn’t be concerned with rain in August but this year has proven to be an exception.”
On Tuesday, cement trucks were seen pouring footing for the school.
Simpson says contractors have been working on the weekends to make up some valuable time.
“Our construction team (W.L. McNatt) is working to revise the schedule in order to allow us to open the building in the fall of 2018.”
Last month Simpson reported the school site developed some challenges with elevation, but the architect and general contractor were able to work through the obstacles. Related article: Unusual amount of rain in August slowing down progress for new school
