So what happens if your high school football team lost perhaps it best quarterback in school history and a running back that went on to Division I football? For most schools, they would have to take time to rebuild. Carl Albert is not one of those school’s.
The Titans lost some key offensive members to their 2009 state championship team in J.T. Realmuto and Tre Porter. Realmuto is now in the Florida Marlins minor league system after signing a six digit bonus and Porter is with the Texas Tech secondary playing as a true freshmen.
All the 2010 Titans are doing this far in the season is leading Class 5A in rushing yards, total yards, and points per game. Those numbers are even more impressive, that CA lost their starting quarterback in the third week of the season. Junior Dillian Dansby made a move when he tore his ACL in the 42-10 win over Duncan. He was 15-for-31 passing for 266 yards.
Insert junior Taylor Hawkins. Hawkins, who shined in the 2009 state championship game with Bixby, has not let the Titan offense skip a beat. Hawkins has thrown for 532 yards on 33-of-42 passing with six touchdown passes with no picks.
Hawkins favorite target is two-way senior player Dwight Dobbins, who leads the team with 16 catches for 284 yards and two scores. Just behind Dobbins in catches is junior Tank Richmond with 11 catches and 150 yards.
CA returns four lineman from a season ago with two very good blocking tight ends and have complimented the two-headed monster in the running game with senior Kenton Whittington and junior Darvonta Knight.
Whittington (5’9, 170) is 5A’s third leading rusher with 705 yards on 98 carries to go with his eight scores. Knight (5’1, 142) also has eight scores with 498 yards on 54 carries.
If the Titans want to have success running the ball they will have to do it against 5A’s best rush defense. Guthrie allows just 51-yards rushing the ball and are holding their opponents to an average of 9 points a game. In the five BlueJay wins, the defense has allowed just 20 points combined.
The headliner of the Guthrie defense is junior linebacker Landry Chappell, who is second in 5A in tackles with 86. Chappell has forced offense’s to the outside, where John Clark, Marcus Ware, Luke Davis, Kentrell Brothers, and Richard Brothers have been waiting. Clark is sixth in tackles (55) and Ware is eighth (54).
When teams have elected to throw the ball, they have been rolling the pocket away from Kentrell Brothers and his 5A leading nine sacks. However, they are running to Richard Brothers, who is third in 5A with eight sacks. Clark not only shows his toughness with 55 tackles, but also has six sacks this season.
The Titans have a secret weapon that is not even 150 pounds or 5’9 tall. Junior kicker Easton Ramsey (5’8, 146) is 4-of-6 in field goal attempts with his longest coming from 38 yards.
