And just like that, the Woodcrest Fire Department has a new home.
Woodcrest firefighters moved into their new station last Monday and on the following day the old station came down.
The station took to their Facebook page, “So long to our old station. It has served us well, but it’s time to go. Out with the old and in with the new. It’s a whole new beginning for WCFD.”
Fire Chief Luke Young says the newly built station “started with a dream and a concept.”
The old station served firefighters for nearly 30 years despite originally built as an insulation shop until converted to a fire station.
A building fund was established several years ago with ad valorem (property tax) money and is on a lease to purchase with Welch Bank. Related article: Woodcrest expanding with new fire station; groundbreaking ceremony held
The new fire house, which was built south of the old station, gives firefighters more space to operate.
The project is approximately 90 percent complete with the northeast drive, parking area, the drive around the west side of the building and some minor landscaping yet to be completed.
The final touch will be the delivery and installation of the storage tank for the sprinkler system.
Total completion is scheduled for the beginning of October.
“Like moving into a new house, it takes a little time to get settled and make it a home,” Young said. “Our new station is our home away from home.”
Young says he appreciates the Woodcrest Fire Board of Directors for “their support on this endeavor and a big thanks to the citizens of our fire district. We couldn’t have done it without any of you.”
A grand opening ceremony is being planned for late October.
