Despite injuries and illness, the Guthrie Wrestling started their dual season with a 48-32 win over Perkins in Payne County.
Head Coach Jack O'Connor's Jays start the season out 1-0.
A season ago, the Jays had a much easier time with a 45-19 home dual win against the Demons. Guthrie entered the 2010 dual ranked 10th in Class 5A.
Perkins took advantage in the lower weights as the Jays controlled the bigger weight matches. In the lower weights Timothy O’Connor (112) pinned his opponent at the 5:43 mark, but the Demons took matches at 103, 119, and 125.
Guthrie’s Ryan Kitch (130) and Dylan Marshall (135) each received forfeits before Perkins picked up a pin in the 140 pound match.
Bryan Dutton, who is coming off a state tournament where he won three of his four matches, needed just 56 seconds to pin his opponent in the 145 division. However, Perkins followed that match with a pin at 152, but the Jays would win four of the next five matches to control the score board.
Dennis Murphy (160) picked up a pin 1:19 into his match while Michael Conner (189) needed just 63 seconds to get his pin. Travis Hudson (171) won by forfeit.
Perkins, who is currently ranked 14th in Class 3A, got their last win with a pin at 215. However, Chappell capped the night off with a pin 3:09 into the match. Chappell, much like Dutton, won three of his four state tournaments matches last season.
Guthrie will participate in the Putnam City Tournament today and Saturday. Last year the Jays finished second in the same tournament. The Junior High will compete in the Shawnee Dual Friday and Saturday as well.
