For the second straight season, the Guthrie High School wrestling program took down a Oklahoma perennial power.
Guthrie (3-0) entered the 5A district dual, Tuesday evening, with El Reno ranked seventh and came away with a 69-6 win setting up a big stage Thursday evening with Deer Creek coming to the GHS gym.
El Reno won 11 straight state championships from 1996 to 2006 and is in the top 10 in Oklahoma history in the number of state champions with 70 total for one of the most successful programs in the state.
On this night, the surging Guthrie program won each match they wrestled and only allowed the six points, at the 112 weight division, with a forfeit. Last season, the Jays took a 47-18 decision in El Reno.
Deer Creek, ranked No. 4 in Class 5A, will be talented throughout their line-up as the Jays try to redeem last year’s 33-29 loss that came down to the final match. A trip to the Dual State Tournament could be on the line.
