District 2 Cleanup Drive and Interstate 35 temporary closure‏

This update has two items that citizens may find of interest: a solid waste grant and an upcoming I-35 detour at Seward Rd.

In a previous update I had mentioned that District 2 is participating in a solid waste program. We applied for money through the Association of County Commissioners of Oklahoma which administers Department of Environmental Quality funds. We were notified in July that we had been
awarded $5,000 to conduct solid waste cleanup.

This funding has enabled us to contract with a local recycling company to provide dumpsters at the county shop at 1550 N. Midwest Blvd. These dumpsters will be available to the public during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except for national holidays, during the months of October and November. If it is necessary for someone to bring solid waste to the dumpsters on Saturday, appointments can be made by calling our office at 282-3405, or my cell phone, at 650-0384.

Dumpsters will be available for solid waste only. Items which will not be accepted include garbage (any kind of food or vegetation), hazardous materials, appliances containing Freon, rubber tires and
liquids.

It is our hope that this service to the community will negate the need for anyone to dump trash on county right-of-way. We would also be appreciative of any civic organization that would volunteer to gather litter or debris from road sides and bring it to the dumpsters.

On a different note, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation has notified us that I-35 will be closed while contractors tear down the old Seward Road overpass. Their plans are to close the interstate at 8:00 p.m. on October 5 and reopen it at 5:00 a.m. October 8. During the time it is closed, traffic will be redirected to the on and off ramps at Seward Road exit. This means that at times, traffic will be congested. Those who can should consider an alternate route during the
hours of closure.
