Guthrie advances to playoffs for 12th straight season with win over Guymon

The Guthrie football program had two scenarios working for them on Friday night to clinch their 12th straight season to qualify for the Class 5A playoffs. Both scenarios worked out for the Jays.

The Bluejays never once trailed when they hosted Guymon in a 31-6 win to finish the regular season at 6-4. With the playoff clinching win, the Jays also secured their 17 straight winning season.

The final 5A-2 standings finished with McGuinness on top followed by Carl Albert, Piedmont and the Jays. Guthrie will travel to Lawton MacArthur, Ardmore will host Piedmont, Carl Albert entertains Altus and Del City makes a trip to McGuinness.

Since 2006, Guthrie is 2-1 against Lawton Mac. The Jays have won the last two meetings, including the 2011 state title game (24-7) and in 2012 when the Jays won the first round game in Lawton (31-13).

The Jays and Highlanders will play on Friday.

On Senior Night, Guthrie saw five different players score in the wire-to-wire win.

Following a misplay on the snap, Guymon allowed the Jays offense to take their first offensive snap near the Tigers 20-yard line. However, the Jays offense stalled out and settled with a 36-yard field goal from David Vargas as the ball just crawled over the crossbar. Vargas finished the night 4-4 on extra points.

Guthrie found the end zone for the first time with an eight play, 79-yard drive resulting in an 8-yard run by senior running back Ty Doolin. Doolin finished with 87 yards on 22 carries.

With a 10-0 halftime lead, Guthrie found the end zone twice in the third quarter.

Senior Cal Davis ran in from 4-yards out and quarterback Jackson Waddell threaded a 41-yard pass to fellow sophomore Marcellous Owens for a 41-yard touchdown. Davis’ touchdown was setup by Kris Grizzard’s second interception of the game.

Guymon (2-8) halted the shut-out in the early part of the fourth quarter.

Junior Isaac Lewis concluded the scoring with a 1-yard run.

Dating back to 2001, Guthrie is now 15-1 when playing on senior nights. In addition, Guthrie is now 5-0 against Guymon over the past five seasons.
