A Guthrie man will stand trial for murder in early March 2013.
William David Evans Jr. is being held without bond for the charge of murder.
William David Evans Jr., 30, was originally charged with aggravated assault and battery after reportedly assaulting Douglas Cline, 53, at his home, 12151 S Bryant Lane, on December 30, 2010. However, due to head and body trauma, Cline died on New Years Day at a hospital changing the charge to murder.
A jury trial is set to begin March 11 at 9 a.m.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Evans told a friend he better had check on Cline because he had beaten him. According to a female in the home, the two men began arguing over wash in the washing machine.
In the report, Evans told a detective that he did not realize he had hit Cline that hard or often, but knew he had knocked him out. Evans reportedly came back to the house to check up on Cline and saw he was still unconscious. Evans told a detective he had cleaned him up and put a pillow under his head before leaving again.
Cline did not receive medical assistance for a reported 18 hours and is believed he would have survived if he had received medical attention.
Officials were able to track a cell phone number, whom Evans had text Cline’s friend and told him he was “next” because he knew he had contacted the police.
Deputies found Evans, arrested him and found him to be wearing clothes with blood on them and had a swollen hand.
At first, Evans told deputies he suffered the swollen hand in a fight with a marijuana dealer, but later admitted it became swollen due to a fight with Cline.
Evans’ father, William David Evans Sr., was arrested and later pleaded guilty to accessory to felony by taking his son to and from the house that the altercation took place, along with taking him to the hospital for treatment of the injuries he suffered in the attack.
Evans Jr. pleaded not guilty in July of 2011.
Just last month, Evans Jr. advised a judge he no longer wanted his court appointed attorney, but waived his right wo a speedy trial.
In 2008, Evans was convicted of first degree burglary and in 2005 was convicted for domestic assault and battery.
Evans Jr. remains in the Logan County jail and being held without bond.
For the best of all concerned, I hope he is found guilty and spends the rest of his life in jail. He has never contributed to his children’s welfare and is a blight on society in general. That’s my opinion.
Well Cindy Kay I grew up with this guy and know for a fact the whole thing wasn’t what they made it out to be. He was a good dude. The kind of guy that would give you the shirt off his back help old lady’s out and so on. But on the other hand he also wasn’t the type to back down either. He loves his kids and always has. If you really knew this dude you’d know more about him then what you the headlines.
