Athletic director talks to student-athletes following events in Norman

A recent event in Norman, resulting in four high school wrestlers being arrested for rape charges, led Guthrie’s athletic director to having a conversation with Guthrie High School student-athletes.

Guthrie’s athletic director Jon Chappell spoke to Guthrie High School student-athletes inside the gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon about potential lasting effects of poor choices.

On Tuesday, four Norman North High School wrestlers were arraigned in Garvin County District Court on rape charges. The students are accused of committing sexual assaults on two boys aged 12 and 16 after a wrestling tournament on Jan. 9. Police reported both boys were assaulted in the back of the bus and the 12-year-old was assaulted again after the bus arrived at the high school.

Chappell, who said the topic had been on his mind over the last few days, spoke to students for 10 minutes about their actions on buses, in locker rooms, dangers of cell phones and social media could leave life-time consequences.

Afterwards, a question and answer session was held.

The school district says each coach routinely has discussions with their athletes, which Chappell says coaches will be even more aware to help protect all students.
