As the final week approaches the 2012 high school baseball season, the Guthrie ball squad will enter with a 23-6 record after going 2-2 at the Deer Creek Tournament.
The BlueJays, who remained ranked third in Class 5A, will have a pivotal two-game set with Deer Creek on Monday and Tuesday. If the Jays can win one of the two game set, they will win district one. An Antler sweep and they will be the district winner. Regardless, both will host a 5A regional.
In the Deer Creek tourney, Guthrie picked up wins over El Reno and Edmond Memorial and dropping decisions to Westmoore and Southmoore.
Half the losses for Guthrie this season has come to 6A squads with an overall are 5-3 against the larger class.
In the opening game of the tournament, Guthrie matched up with Westmoore in a game that went nine innings. With a 2-2 tie in the ninth, Guthrie plated two runs in the frame, but allowed three in the defeat.
The Jaguars (22-9) collected 12 hits, but did themselves no favors by surrendering 10 runners on base.
The BlueJays got back in the win column with back-to-back wins over Memorial and El Reno.
Reed Roberts went the distance on the mound to collect the win over the Bulldogs (11-18) in a game that lasted just 90 minutes.
The BlueJay offense put a four spot on the board in the third to hold on for the 4-1 win.
In the next win, Guthrie needed just five innings to run-rule fellow 5A school El Reno. The Indians (9-3) have been injury riddled this season and were not at full force in the stack field.
In the final game, the Jays ran into a Southmoore (21-8) team that has perhaps made the biggest jump from a year ago. The Sabercats scored in six of the seven innings to eliminate the Jays from playing on Saturday with a 9-3 decision.
Guthrie travels back to Deer Creek on Monday for the key district game before both teams take the diamond at Squires Field on Tuesday. Both games are set for a 5 p.m. start.
