TULSA – It was the start the Guthrie baseball team had in mind at the 5A state tournament, but it was not the ending they were prepared for.
Guthrie jumped out to a 2-1 lead after five innings, but were unable to hold on to that lead over Durant as the Lions erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning to collect the 8-2 win and advance to the semifinals.
Durant was ousted by Claremore the following day, who lost to Carl Albert in the championship game.
Senior Luke Davis scored that most important first run of a state tournament game in the first inning before the Lions tied the game up in the second inning.
Guthrie was back in the lead after the fifth when senior Scott Pickle started the inning with a single and was followed by a single by Davis. Pickle later scored on an error from the outfield to give the Jays a 2-1 lead after five complete.
Bryan Dutton got the call on the mound and pitched the first five innings. The junior allowed one unearned, six hits and hitting two.
Guthrie then went to their bullpen in the sixth and were unable to stop the Lions attack as they got going in the decisive sixth inning
In the frame, Durant sent 11 men to the plate en route to their seven runs. They did so by collecting three hits and taking advantage of two errors, a walk, a hit batsmen and an intentional walk.
The damage was done with the Lions left with an 8-2 lead and the Jays down to their final three outs.
Davis and Dutton each collected singles in the Jays last at bat, but were left on base.
The BlueJays ends their season with a 28-7 record.
