Edmond, Okla. – One thing is for certain this season, Guthrie Baseball is not afraid to play a game beyond seven innings.

The third ranked BlueJays erupted for four runs in the top of the ninth inning to secure the District I championship with a 6-2 win over fourth ranked Deer Creek Monday evening. The Antlers needed to sweep the two-game series to over take the Jays.

Both teams will turn around and play Tuesday with a 5:00 first pitch inside Squires Field.

The game marks the third time the Jays have played a nine-inning game and are 2-1 in those games. The Jays have now won five games this season in their final at bat (Shawnee, Enid, Edmond Santa Fe, Moore and Deer Creek).

In the decisive ninth inning, Donovan Jordan started the inning with a base on ball and ended at third base with a Luke Davis bunt and wild pitch before eventually scoring along with Bryan Dutton and Landry Chappell, who were both consecutively intentionally walked, on a huge 3-run double by Hayden Seifert.

Clint Simek continued the scoring when he brought home Seifert on an RBI single to give the Jays the four-run lead and eventual win.

The Antlers managed two base runners in the ninth, but left two on base in the home half of the eighth inning and in the seventh inning had runners on first and second with no outs, but the Jays escaped with no harm to force extra baseball.

Guthrie struck first in the first inning with a Seifert RBI single to plate Dutton and then again in the third inning with a Simek RBI single to score Landry Chappell to take a 2-0 lead.

Deer Creek responded with two runs of their own in the fifth to tie the game up at 2-2.

Seifert finished by going 3-for-5 and four RBI’s while Simek was just as impressive with a 3-for-5 performance with 2 RBI’s.

Dutton pitched well enough for the win by pitching six solid innings before giving way to Jacob Chappell, who pitched the final three innings to secure the pitching win.

The BlueJays improve to 24-6 overall and 11-0 in district play while the Antlers fall to 20-10 and 9-2 inside the district.
