The 2020-2021 Guthrie High School basketball season is underway. Both the girls and boys teams recently participated in their first tournament of the season.

The Lady Jays, who are coached by Malcom Roberts, are off to a 4-2 start and currently ranked 12th in Class 5A.

The team has collected wins over Class 4A’s Pauls Valley (52-31), 6A’s Northwest Classen (51-26), Class 3A’s Chisholm (54-42) and Class 5A’s Altus.

The Lady Jays gave Millwood, Class 3A’s third ranked team, everything they wanted, but fell short 68-63.

Guthrie finished 2-1 this past weekend in the Woodward Invitational with a third place finish with the two wins over Chisholm and Altus. Their lone setback came to Class 4A’s Woodward, 67-44.

In the win over Altus, Anjewl Murillo scored 36 points, while Kyra Wheeler poured in 23 points.

For the Bluejays, they have started the season with a 1-3 record.

The Jays, coached by Sean Morgan, opened the season with Class 3A’s top-ranked Millwood Falcons and were doubled up on their home floor, 60-30.

In the Woodward Invitational, Guthrie picked up their lone win in the opening game over the Woodward junior varsity team (83-41). The team followed that up with overtime losses to both Glenpool (57-53) and Chisholm (53-47).

The Bluejays will search for the win column on Tuesday when they host the Class 3A Jones Longhorns beginning at 6:30 p.m.
