All incumbents file for city council, school board seats

When you combine the Guthrie city council and school board there were six seats up for election. Following the candidate filing last week, only one seat will go to an election.

Candidates for the municipal offices and board of educations filed their declarations of candidacy last week.

For the Guthrie city council, each of the three wards and the mayor’s office were up for election.

Incumbents Jim Case (Ward 1), Jeff Taylor (Ward 2), Sharyl Padgett (Ward 3) and Steve Gentling (Mayor) all filed for re-election.

Gentling will be seated for his fourth two-year term, while Taylor takes his third term and Case’s second term. All ward seats are elected to four-year terms.

Only Padgett, who was appointed to the council in 2013, won election in 2015 and appointed again to the council in 2020) drew four challengers.

Filing for the Ward 3 office, includes Padgett, Danny Smith, Tracy Williams, Franklin Danley and Jesse Morris.

The primary election will be held on Feb. 9. If a candidate does not receive 50 percent of the vote, the top two candidates will move on to the general election on April 6.

For the Guthrie Board of Education there will not be an election.

Ron Plagg (Seat 2) and Gina Davis (Seat 6) did not draw an opponent and will be sworn back into office in February 2021.

Coyle Public Schools
Seat 1 — Christie Calvert and Justin Whitmore
Seat 4 — Amy Caldwell and Chuck Edwards

Crescent Public Schools
Seat 1 — Christopher Channel and Mark Garrett

Mulhall-Orlando Public Schools
Seat 1 — Jacob Decker

The General Election will be held on Tuesday, April 6, 2021.
