Beeby pleased with Jays following first scrimmage

Three teams, who are expected to suit up for the playoffs come November, met up for a three-way scrimmage at Langston University’s Anderson Field on Friday.

Guthrie, Bishop Kelley and Douglass once again participated in the scrimmage with ideal weather conditions. Each offense and defense took 12 snaps from each opponent.

The Guthrie defense held the Comets and Trojans out of the end zone and proved to be dominant by holding their opponents on 21 plays of five yards or less, including two interceptions and two sacks.

Senior defensive back Jalyn Morgan collected the interceptions while Marco Arzate brought down Trojan quarterback Patrick McKaufman.

The Bluejay offense was hampered entering the scrimmage with minor injuries up front to the offensive line.

The highlights came from the passing game with senior signal caller Zane Maltz finding senior wide-out Chance Whitt.

On the fifth play from scrimmage against Douglass, the duo hooked up for a 36-yard connection down the visitors sideline. The big play led to Maltz scoring from 2-yards out on a keeper six plays later.

Against Kelley, it was a 28-yard pass and catch.

Guthrie utilized three running backs on the night with Kevin Blue and Rowdy Reihs collecting majority of the snaps. Ty Doolin, a starting defensive back, picked up carries once inside the 10-yard line.

The Bluejays, once again, will be on the radar for Class 5A football come playoff time. The Jays will look for some new faces to produce at the wide receiver and running back positions in 2015.

Bishop Kelley, who missed out on the playoffs a year ago with a 5-5 record, returns several key members and is ranked in the top 15 in preseason polls.

Douglass will depend on McKaufman for another deep run in the Class 3A playoffs. A quarterfinals teams a season ago (10-3), the Trojans have the highest goal and are the favorites in the 3A-2 district.
