The Guthrie Kiwanis Club was looking for a ‘89er Celebration event that they could sponsor that would highlight youth since that is the main focus of their club.
Kiwanis Club President, Price Purvis and Cody Mosley, Economic Development Director for the City of Guthrie, got their heads together and came up with the idea of a “Big Wheel Race” and at 5 p.m., Friday, April 19 we will see the results of their efforts.
Price said, “The Kiwanis Club has wanted to do something to promote Guthrie and the ‘89er Celebration and the Big Wheel idea was a perfect fit. The races will be held on the parking lot at the intersection of 1st Street and W. Harrison Ave. We have 10 big wheels all tuned up and ready to go. There will be “racing heats” for ages 3-7 years old, boys and girls alike. Medals will be awarded to winners in each age category. It should be great fun.”
Mosley added, “I have seen this done in other places and it is always fun for children and adults alike. It is great that we are including the ‘Big Wheel Races for young ones’ and at the same time one block over we are having the ‘Old Wheels for older ones’ with the Geezers and Gassers Classic Cars. Two venues and something for everyone. There is no need for advanced registration, just come by the ‘race track’ and sign in.”
