Bluejays, Morgan chasing state championship in Duncan

The Guthrie Bluejays sit between two private schools after 36 holes of the Class 5A state golf tournament. Atop the leaderboard is Guthrie freshmen Luke Morgan.

Morgan shot a first round 71 and a second round 4-over 75 at the Duncan Golf & Tennis Club. The freshmen stand-out chipped in twice in the first six holes and set it on cruise control for the remainder of the round.

“Felt like I left a couple of shots out there, but I can’t be mad for being tied in the lead,” Morgan said.

Morgan will tee off for the final 18 at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Also, in the lead is Piedmont’s senior Dustin Hasley, who finished as last year’s 5A individual runner-up. The Oral Roberts University commit and Morgan have battled throughout the season.

Fellow Jays freshmen Bo Robbins posted a day one score of 159 by shooting 77 and 82. Freshmen Luke Roach improved five shots in the second round to finish at 161.

Senior Jarrot Gates and sophomore Luke Dale finished with scores of 167.

Jays chasing Bishop Kelley

Bishop Kelley’s top five golfers combined to shoot 79 or lower in seven of the 10 rounds scored and will have a 20 stroke going into the final 18 holes. The Comets combined to score a day one low of 610.

Guthrie sits in second with 630 with McGuinness (631) within a shot and Guymon (632) back two shots.
