BOE approves new gymnasium seating, track surface

The Board of Education approved two renovation projects for Guthrie High School, including new seating in the school’s gymnasium.

The school board unanimously approved two winning bids at Monday night’s board meeting.

“These two things really excite me because I know how many kids that these are going to touch,” board president Tina Smedley said.

Performance Surfaces was the lowest bid to replace the home (south) side seating. The current seats were installed when the school was built in 1967.

Parts for the 51-year-old seating are no longer available. Over the years, many seats have been taken out for parts and repairs.

The winning bid came in at $72,970.

In 2014, the gym’s north side seating was replaced after they were installed in 1971. That project was also constructed by Performance Surfaces.

Back on track

When athletes run on the high school track they must be careful. Very careful.

In the successful 1996 school bond issue, a new seven lane track was installed, but surface repairs have not been able to be completed over the last two decades.

The track can be seen with several cracks filled in with grass, the surface worn down to the concrete and in some places the track has fallen in.

The board awarded the track repairs to Merritt Tennis and Track Systems with a bid of $94,183.02.

School officials said the projects will be funded through three funds, including the 2015 school bond, the district’s building fund and interest earned from the bond funds.

“We were able to spend our (bond) dollars wisely and to be able to make that first bond go so much further. (They are) much needed for our district,” Smedley added.

Both projects will be begin this upcoming summer.
