The Guthrie BlueJays and Lady Jays tennis teams were back at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center for the Altus Tournament. Click here for photo gallery.
For the BlueJays, it was their doubles team leading the way with both teams finishing third.
Andy Hartley and Josh Wehrenberg playing No. 1 doubles, defeated NW Classen in the first round 6-3, 6-0, and in the second round they beat Stillwater in three sets 0-6, 6-1, 6-3. In the semi-finals, they lost to the one seed Westmoore 6-1, 6-3. In their final match for third place, they were defeated by Southmoore 6-0, 6-1.
In No. 2 doubles, Barrett Porter and Seth Vicchio had a bye in the first round and then defeated Chickasha 6-0, 6-1 in the second round. In the semi-finals they played top seeded McGuinness and lost 6-1, 6-2. In their match for third place they defeated by Stillwater 6-0, 6-1.
In No. 1 singles action, Dylan Walker played an opponent from NW Classen and was defeated 6-0, 6-1, In the second round he lost to El Reno in three sets 0-6, 6-4, 3-6 and in his final match he won by injury default.
Corlan Combs played in No. 2 singles and dropped his opening round to NW Classen and in his second round lost to El Reno 6-1, 6-0. Combs won his final match against Moore 6-2, 6-0.
Lady Jays Tennis
In No. 1 singles action, Sarah Howells played Ponca City in the first round and lost in three sets 7-6, 2-6, 10-2. In the second round she played Westmoore and lost 6-1, 6-1 and in her final round she played Moore and won 6-0, 6-1.
Khristan Adams took on the No. 2 singles field and lost to Altus in the her first round 6-1, 6-3, in the opening first round, and then had a bye in the next round before losing to Ponca City 6-0, 6-2.
Brooke Powell and Taylar Swartzbaugh placed fifth overall in No. 1 doubles. They opened the tourney with a first round bye before losing to Ponca City 6-4, 6-2. In the next round, they beat Chickasha 7-5, 7-6 and in their final round for fifth they defeated Westmoore in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 10-4.
Cheyenne Royal and Heidi Kurvuilla placed fourth overall. In their first round they beat NW Classes 6-0, 6-0 and in their second round they beat Altus in three sets 6-2, 6-7, 10-4. In their third round, they lost to the No. 1 seed McGuinness 6-3, 6-1 and in their final match they lost to Stillwater 6-3, 6-1.
“I was really proud of these two girls because this is their first year to play varsity and they competed really well at this tournament,” head coach Mary Hudson said.
Guthrie will travel to Bartlesville for their next match on Monday, April 11th. Hudson grew up playing basketball and tennis in Bartlesville and in her senior year was named to the All-State team in Tennis.
