Shawnee Smith leads the way for Lady Jays

It was not a Texas two-step, but a Texas Tango for the Guthrie tennis teams playing in the Altus Tournament at Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

In No. 1 singles action, Lady Jays Shawnee Smith placed third overall. In the first round she beat Hannah Layman from Hereford, Tx 6-3, 6-4 and in the second round she lost to the No. 1 overall seed from McGuiness Mia Lancaster 6-0, 6-1.

In the third place match she defeated the No. 2 seed from Southmoore, Shauna Beach 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Playing No. 2 singles, Kristyn Reed, placed 11th. 

The No. 2 doubles team of Sarah Howells and Taylar Swarzbaugh placed 5th by winning their first match against El Reno 6-0, 6-0, but lost their second round to 6A’s Southmoore 6-4, 6-2. They won their third round against Westmoore 7-5, 6-2 and won their final round against the No. 2 seed of the tournament Hereford, TX 7-6, 7-5.

For the Jays, No. 1 singles player Dylan Williams placed sixth overall. He had a bye in the first round and in the second round he lost to Ponca City 6-4, 6-1. In the third round he defeated El Reno 6-3, 6-0, but in his final round lost to Southmoore 6-4, 6-2.

No. 2 singles player Barrett Porter placed sixth. He too had a first round bye and dropped his match to Altus 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. In the third round he defeated Midwest City 6-1, 6-0. In the final round for fifth placed he lost to Ponca City 6-1, 6-0. 

Once again, the Jays were led by the  No. 1 doubles team of  Hank Hudson and Josh Wehrenberg. The duo finished with yet another second place.

They had a bye in the first round and moved on to defeat Westmoore 6-0, 6-1 before moving on and defeating Hereford, Tx, the No. 3 seed, in the semi-finals 6-3, 6-1. However, the Jays lost in the finals to McGuiness 6-3, 6-1. 

No. 2 doubles team of Dalton Jones and Seth Vicchio won consolation.They lost their first round to Ponca City 6-3, 6-3, but turn around to beat Southmoore 6-3, 6-1 in the second round and El Reno 6-1, 6-2 in the finals of consolation. 

Next up for the tennis teams and head coach Mary Hudson is Bartlesville, Monday, and then hosting the Guthrie 89er at OCTC next  Friday. Hudson attended Bartlesville High School where she was an All State tennis selection.
