There is still three weeks left in the high school football regular season, but Kentrell Brothers has made his case for being named the player of the year in the state of Oklahoma.
Brothers has and will continue to put his team in front of any individual honor, but if it’s possible Brothers has made a bigger name for himself this season.
On the biggest stage this far in the season, in a 32-14 win over No. 3 ranked Carl Albert, Brothers shined on both sides of the ball by collecting 8-catches for 157-yards and four touchdown receptions, and on defense totaled nine tackles and two sacks.
Brothers leads Class 5A in receptions, yards, and touchdown receptions. He also leads 5A in sacks and when you put all of his numbers together on both sides of the ball he is at, or near the top regardless of class.
A season ago, Brothers led the state with 17 sacks and was not too far behind with 15 in his sophomore season. Offensively in 2009, he became Guthrie’s first receiver to collect 1,000 yards in a single season.
He continues to add to his school records of catches, receiving yards, touchdown receptions, and sacks.
Brothers back in week one worked against a Division I right and left tackle and collected five sacks, but maybe more impressive was his four catches, three for scores, and 172 yards receiving.
All of these numbers are impressive when you add in the fact everyone knows about Brothers and works their game plan around him. Brothers not only is a great offensive player, defensive player, special teams player, a lead blocker, but also carries an upper grade point average.
He currently holds 14 major Division I offers and is a slam dunk for an All-State selection, but will be a major part when the Player of the Year award is announced.
