Guthrie – Carl Albert: How they got here

The Guthrie – Carl Albert winner will be in the captain seat for the Class 5A-1 district championship and perhaps two home playoff games at home. The loser may have to settle for just one home playoff game and a trip to Tulsa for the second round.

Here are how the Jays and Titans made it to identical 5-1 records.

Week 1

Easily the game of the week to begin the season was in Midwest City with the Titans and top-ranked Booker T. Washington. Both teams defense’s were up for the challenge.

The Titans, who played their first game on artificial turf, had a chance to win on a late field goal, but the kick went wide left and the Hornets left Harris Field with a 12-10 win. The Titans did not help their cause by losing four of their five fumbles.

Guthrie also had one of the state’s top games with the Duncan Demons, but the Jays took the air out of the game by scoring 18 first quarter points. Duncan managed just 113 yards of offense in the entire night, including just 25 yards rushing.

Kentrell Brothers finished the night with four catches, three for scores, and 172 yards receiving. On the defensive side, he collected five sacks, forced a fumble, and recovered a fumble.

Week 2

The Titans hit the road for the first time and Ardmore fans could not wait for them to leave town. Carl Albert jumped out to a 24-0 halftime lead and capped the win off with a 34-6 win.

Head coaches Rafe Watkins and Gary Rose are good friends off the field, but this week they are trying to give their team a district championship.

Ardmore could manage just 213 yards of offense and watch the Titans go for 406 yards of offense. Quarterback Dillan Dansby finished the evening by going 11-20 for 102 yards in the air and 141 yards on the ground.

The Jays went to the ground in their 35-6 win over 6A’s Ponca City and doing the work was Alphonso Wilcots. He finished the night with 22 carries for 150 yards along with two scores.

The Guthrie defense proved to be solid once more by holding the Wildcats to just 228 yards of offense and forcing three turnovers.

Week 3

It was back on the road for Carl Albert as they went South, again, to get a convincing 42-10 win over Duncan. However, the Titans lost starting quarterback Dansby to a season ending ACL injury.

The Titans running backs were stellar in the win. Darvonta Knight finished with 141 yards and Kenton Whittington added 146 yards. Together the duo finished with four touchdowns. The Titan offense finished with 428 yards of offense and held the Demons in check with 248 yards.

The Jays were on the road as well in the first road game of the season in Enid. Guthrie jumped out to a 15-0 lead, but the Plainsmen scored 30 second half points to get by the Jays, 37-36, in a back-and-forth second half game.

The Jays seemed to have lost some of their momentum in the first series of the second half when senior running back Alphonso Wilcots went down with an injury. The senior has not returned since the injury.

Week 4

It was back on the road for the Titans (third straight road game) and once again another big win. This time it was Western Heights taking it on the chin.

Despite holding the Titans to just seven first quarter points, the Jets could not hold back CA in the second quarter. The Titans erupted for 30 points in the frame and completed the game with a 50-6 win and collected the district win.

Guthrie got their first district win as well by playing their third game, of four, inside Jelsma Stadium with a 41-7 over ranked Deer Creek. The Jays jumped out to a 24-0 first quarter led and a 41-0 halftime score.

In the end, the Guthrie offense exploded for 442 yards of offense while holding Deer Creek to 123 yards of offense. Entering the game, Deer Creek had averaged 301 yards of offense.

Week 5

Homecoming welcome the Titans back home and for El Reno that was not a good thing. CA erupted for 57 points and proved that last year’s 44-7 win over the Indians in the state semi-finals was not a fluke.

Quarterback Taylor Hawkins was 13-for-19 passing for 200 yards and added 78 more yards on the ground. The Titans showed how balance they can be with 277 passing and 279 rushing in the game.

Thins were not as easy in Ada, but a win is a win and Guthrie did that with a 13-7 win. The Jays jumped out to a 13-0 lead and Ada added a kick return early in the second quarter to finish the scoring.

Guthrie’s defense was stout in holding the Cougars to just 70 yards of offense in the entire game.

Week 6

It was safe to say that neither team was looking past their week six opponent. Combined the Titans and Jays won 128-0 with CA thumping Southeast, 72-0, and Guthrie whipping Noble 56-0.

Both teams enter 5-1 overall and 3-0 in district play and appear to be hosting first round games, but who will be hosting two? The verdict will be Friday night and broadcasted on both radio and television.

Triple Play Sports Radio 105.1 FM and Guthrie Sports Page will have the radio call and Cox Communications will have the TV broadcast. Pregame for both starts at 7:00.
