Jays favorite to win football district title?

Is it not amazing how one season of high school football can be different from the next? It was gloom and doom by a good part of BlueJay fans last season after an 0-2 start, but quickly got back on the wagon and rode the team to the state semi’s and almost to the title game.

Nothing will change in the 2010 season when the Guthrie BlueJays and Carl Albert Titans fight for the top spot in the district.

Now with spring drills behind, Guthrie will get set for the 2010 season in which they will be the favorite to win the Class 5A, District 1 title.

Yes, Carl Albert remains in the district and yes the Jays have just one district title, in 2007, in recent memory, and yes the Titans are coming off yet another state championship. Oh, of course, I remember the Titans embarrassing the Jays early and often last year on the Jays home sod. How could I forget?

Both the Jays and Titans have holes they must plug-in, but the Titans have more skill positions to fill in by September. Granted those players are going to be very athletic, untested, but athletic and will fill in as other players have been doing for the last two decades.

I am not sure Rafe Watkins or Gary Rose wants to be picked as the favorite, but I know it does not bother them either. I imagine Rose will pick Guthrie and Watkins will pick Carl Albert to win the district. I do know this, Rafe will tell me that Carl Albert deserves the top spot in the district and in Class 5A until someone proves it otherwise. Hard to argue against that.

Rose is great when it comes to down playing his team early in the season and even midway through the season, and he is usually right. He knows what it takes in Week 11 thru 14 to win and weeks 1-10 are just a dress rehearsal.

Titans must replace the all-world quarterback in J.T. Realmuto, who is the best Titan QB I have seen play wearing the CA logo, on offense along with Tre Porter. The offense will not be running dry at running back with Kenton Whittington returning.

Watkins and the Jays make winning the district one of their goals every season. They do not hide from what they want to achieve and will be wanting their second district title.

The Guthrie offense will returned a more experienced offensive line, a quarterback that has proven he is willing to fight every play, and a play maker like Kentrell Brothers will help the Jays to achieve that goal.

Jays and Titans will square off on October 15th in Midwest City.

The Guthrie defense returns a lot of tackles with Brothers, Landry Chappell, and Luke Davis. Felix Scott brings the party back for his senior year.

The Jays must fill their holes at nose guard and both cornerback spots. Someone will have to fill the space that Jaden Chappell controlled, the running game has to improve, but if the Jays get the play from Derrick Kelly like he did in the Bixby game that will be plenty, but he will need some help from Alfonso Wilcots and perhaps Davis.

Now its obvious that being the favorite does not mean you automatically win the district and on the night of November 5th it turns out that Carl Albert won the district would I be surprised? HECK NO!
