It wasn’t necessarily a must win for the Guthrie boys basketball team, but it certainly was a good Homecoming win.
Guthrie out scored Shawnee 17-8 and finished the game the way head coach Pete Papahronis has been waiting to see. With back-to-back conference wins, the BlueJays improve to 7-4 with a 62-49 win in front of a packed GHS gymnasium.
Kai Callins lead the way for Guthrie with 22 points and just missed out on a double-double with eight rebounds. Shawnee’s Dejoun Sanders finished with a game high 23 points.
Shawnee took the lead on three different occasions, but none more than two-points and when Bailey Nichols hit a shot with 3:40 until halftime to give the home team the lead for good, 21-20, and lead at the break 27-22.
Shawnee pulled with one, 29-28, in the quarter but only to see Codee Gross and Shron Parker put three straight buckets in the next few minutes to build the lead up 7-points. By the end of the quarter, Shawnee pulled within three, 45-41, in an entertaining quarter.
In the final quarter, Guthrie started an 8-3 run to go up 53-44 and kept their distance by making 11 of their 17 fourth quarter free throws.
Up next, Guthrie hosts Piedmont, Tuesday evening, in a rematch of December 16th when the Jays picked up a 57-43 win in Piedmont. The game can be heard on Triple Play Sports 105.1 FM and on Guthrie Sports Page.
