Church leaders take part in training to help prevent active shooter situations

Church leaders, members and pastors took part in a two-hour active threat response course to help recognize early warning signs and how to respond against an active shooter situation in their congregation.

The training course was held last week inside the First Christian Church.

Jim McBride, with the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security, an expert on safety in a faith-based setting led the training.

McBride informed the group 9 people were killed in 2000 inside a house of worship and saw that number increase to 117 in 2017.

The course outlined understanding active shooter events, survival mindset and response actions.

McBride said churches should lock their doors during their services and have a plan in place ahead of time.

If you find yourself in an active shooter scenario McBride says you should attempt to get out, use cover, take action to protect yourself or go to a room and secure your location.

McBride stressed everyone should be prepared to defend themselves and you’re responsible for yourself until law enforcement arrives.

Is there a place to request more information on hosting a similar training at our church?
