Committee recommends lowering speed limit on Walnut to 25 mph

Bookmark and Share

The Guthrie Street Committee met Wednesday evening and has recommended the city council lower the speed limit on Walnut Street.

Walnut Street is becoming one of the busiest roads in the city by being a beltway to Guthrie High School and Guthrie Upper Elementary School. With the increase in traffic, the committee has suggested decreasing the speed from 35 mph to 25 mph.

The committee came to the solution that decreasing the speed would help in safety with not only vehicles (including buses), but for school children who walk to and from school and pedestrians who run the popular street.

The new speed limit would begin from Noble to Hillcrest.

South Division speed limit lowering as well?

The street committee also recommends to the city council that the speed limit on South Division (US 77) be lowered to 45 mph from 55 mph.

The proposed speed limit reduction would go past the entrances of Mission Hills housing edition and the Savanah House apartment complex intersection. City Council would need to approve the recommendation.

Since 2009, there have been 9 wrecks in the area stemming from a vehicle slowing or stopping to turn into one of the entrances.

The committee also recommended adding more eye-catching signs than what is already in place with perhaps flashing lights.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has not yet responded to the city’s inquiry on the proposal of the speed reduction.

Cottonwood Flats closing multiple roads?

With recommendation approval from the Bluegrass Festival and Guthrie Fire Chief Eric Harlow, the City of Guthrie will be closing roads in the Cottonwood Flats area to help create more of a natural state look.

Streets Maintenance Supervisor Tenny Maker is suggesting Washington street from 8th to 5th street be closed along with 6th street from Mansur to College, Mansur from 7th to 8th street, 7th street from Warner to Mansur and 4th street from Warner to Logan.

The city council would need to approve the recommendation.

I am at 619 East College. And I think the school buses need to slow down from Elm St.to Walnut St. I think they drive to fast coming down the hill. Because if the breaks ever stop working they will go right in to the creek. That is my 2cents.thanks.
