Community Garden: What tracks are in your garden?

A little bit of rain and warm temperatures will do wonders for any garden but with the wind we have been having you need to be very attentive to your plants.  The strong winds and a little heat will burn those young plants and kill them if you aren’t careful.

Mark SpradlinMoisture is needed at more often intervals during these times to allow the plants to take care of themselves.  Some people have already planted the seeds or plants for all different kinds of melons and they appear to be doing well.  Keep an eye on them because it is still a little early for these seeds and plants because the soil is not warm enough.  The cooler soil temperature will slow them down a little but they should catch up nicely.

The garden in my backyard has turned into a container garden.  These containers are so much easier to control and pull weeds and grass and pick all the vegetables that will come out of them.  I will try to get some pictures as they get going.

Are you a person that likes figuring out what kinds of tracks are being left in your garden by the variety of animals that come visiting when you aren’t there?  Well go on down to the Mineral Wells Park Pond and look at the really nice tracks that are being left in the mud.  I bet that in ten million years that people will be trying to figure out what kind of historic or prehistoric animal left those prints.

Remember that if you do go down there please stay out of the mud.  It looks dry but it is deep in nasty mud and you will sink right down and keep on going all the way to Mulhall.  It takes a nasty turn under the ground if you sink below the surface.

The seeds and tomatoes and peppers have been planted and lots of mulch has been spread throughout the middle and the east end of the garden.  We are trying to get some more mulch but it seems that everyone wants more this time of year and they are delivering or dumping the stuff at other locations.  I hope we can get another five or six big loads of good mulch.

The apple trees in front of the new water treatment plant are doing well.  The green leaves are really green.  We have to wait to see the baby apples start to show up to know how well they are going to do this year.  We might actually be able to get a few apples this year but it is still early in the life of these trees to be real productive.  They will be getting stronger and more productive.  It may be time to remove the supports from the trees.  They should be strong enough and their roots should be deep enough to hold the tree in the proper position during stressful times so that only an Oklahoma tornado can damage them.
