Councilman resigns after controversial comment following assassination attempt on former President Trump

A Guthrie city councilman has resigned after making a controversial comment on social media.

Councilman Jim Case has resigned from his position, effective immediately, following a comment he made regarding the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania last weekend.

Case regretted his remark in a public statement released by the City of Guthrie, acknowledging its inappropriateness.

“I recently made a comment on social media that I now realize was inappropriate in nature. I never intended for the comment to be meant in the manner it was but I recognize now that I should not have said it at all. I sincerely apologize.”

Case added, “Accordingly, I am resigning my seat as a Ward I representative on the Guthrie City Council effective immediately.”

The comment was made on a local citizen’s post asking why rally attendees were taking pictures instead of taking cover during the shooting.

Case’s comment to the post read, “piss poor shooting!,” was posted on July 13 and has since been deleted.

City Manager Eddie Faulkner also issued a statement, thanking Case for his service to the community. “The City of Guthrie would like to thank Councilman Case for his time dedicated to the city over the last seven years.”

Reflecting on his tenure, Case added, “We have accomplished much during my time on the City Council and I appreciate the hard work and dedication of our City Council members and staff. I wish them nothing but success going forward.”

Case is the sixth council member to resign since 2014 and the fourth since 2019.

With the vacancy of Case’s Ward I position, the City Council shall select, by an affirmative vote of at least four members, an eligible person to fill the vacancy at the next regular meeting of the City Council following the creation of the vacancy or as soon thereafter as is practical. For individuals that might want to consider applying at a later date, when the City Council opens the application period to fill this position, pursuant to City Charter Section 6-16 Mayor and Council Qualifications, below are the qualifications:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States of America and the State of Oklahoma;
  • Must be 21 years of age or older;
  • Must be a registered voter;
  • Must be a resident of the City of Guthrie for two (2) years immediately preceding the date of the last general election; and
  • Must be a resident of Ward I.
