County Clerk shares monitoring system after person attempted to steal a house

With recent reports of a fraudulent deed being filed in Oklahoma County, Logan County Clerk Troy Cole says there are steps to avoid being a victim.

Last week, the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office was called to the County Clerk’s Office where a person attempted to file fraudulent paperwork to take possession of a home. The person, who was arrested and charged, told deputies a friend purchased the home for $5000.

While investigating, deputies noticed the signature on the fraudulent paperwork did not match the homeowner’s signature.

Cole says her office has received waves of calls, emails, and visits from concerned citizens to her office.

“There is no real way to prevent the fraudulent deeds from being recorded as they are presented meeting all of the statutory requirements for recordation,” Cole said.

The clerk wants citizens to know that a free monitoring service is available to residents through OKCountyRecords.com.

“The monitoring system will send an email if any type of document is recorded for a certain name or legal description. While the notification doesn’t stop the recording it does give knowledge to citizens who can take immediate action,” she said.
