Over 1.5 million high school students nationwide applied to be a National Merit Finalist, but only 15,000 were selected for the high honor. One of those awarded for the distinction was Guthrie High School senior Dawson Sallee.

“This is a very competitive, rigorous program and from my understanding this is the first time in 20 years that Guthrie High School has had a National Merit finalist,” GHS Principal Chris LeGrande said as he introduced Sallee at Monday night’s Board of Education meeting.

To become a National Merit Finalist, Semifinalist must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes their academic record, extracurricular activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, honors and awards.

They must also be endorsed by a high school official, submit an essay, and perform well on the SAT. The National Merit Scholarship program honors students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

“We are very proud of what you have done academically, and we also know that you work hard not just in the classroom but extra-curriculars and we appreciate all that you do for Guthrie High School,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said.

Sallee was honored with a citation from State Rep. Garry Mize and State Senator Chuck Hall.

Sallee’s father, Travis, who has served on the board of education for 10 years thanked all the teachers who helped his son along the way.

“As a father and board member, I am very proud. Dawson has worked very hard,” Travis said. “It’s hard to believe he’s a senior. The years have flown by. I know he will do great things in life.”

By the conclusion of the 2022 competition about 7,500 Finalists will be selected as National Merit Scholarship recipients.
