Demons await Guthrie in season opener

The Duncan Demons will have several questions that will need to be answered beginning on Friday night, but a nucleus has the Guthrie coaching staff ready for a competitive season opener.

2009 Duncan 1st round playoff 20 to 12 066“Jim Holloway is one of the greats in our profession,” Guthrie defensive coordinator Kelly Beeby said of the Duncan coach that is set to begin his 41st season on a high school football sideline.

“He always has a very discipline, fundamental football team.”

Holloway, who begins his 9th season in Duncan, expects his team to compete for a play-off spot despite having an inexperienced team to begin the season.

The defense returns only three starters with each of those coming in the secondary. This leaves the Demons searching for a front seven.

Holloway feels he has a good rotation of players to fill in those spots on the defensive line with Daniel Moore, Alyx Turner, Dalton Dismuke and Hayden Moore who are all mobile.

The linebackers are expected to be Bryce Byford, Stacee Morrison and Hunter Kelly. Byford will be excited to get back on the field after missing half the season with an injury.

The Demons do return Connor Kelly and his 90 tackles from a season ago in the secondary. He will be joined by Austin Drake and Mason Hightower.

The Duncan offense will remain a wishbone running type team with five starters returning from a team was 6-5 in 2012.

“It puts a lot of pressure on your defenders to play by assignment on every play. We will have all we want defending the option and their overall team speed,” Beeby said.

Headlining the offense will be running back Je’Mario McCoy, who totaled 1,024 yards on the ground. Assiting McCoy will be fellow senior Austin Drake.

The Demons appear they will go with senior left-hander Connor Kelly at the quarterback spot after competing for the job with two others this spring.

Game time is set for 7:30 inside Halliburton Stadium. The game can be heard on Triple Play Sports Radio 105.1 FM and all outlets on Guthrie Sports Page.
