Progress continues on the University Bridge east of Midwest. A temporary low water crossing has been built, the old bridge torn out and dirt excavated where the new structure will be placed. Forms to create keyways in the concrete footings for new bridge legs have been constructed. If the weather cooperates, next week ditches will be dug and rebar placed for the footings. Scurlock Industries was awarded the bid for the new bridge. It will be a pre-cast, reinforced concrete,
three-sided structure. Scurlock is in the process of completing five sections which will form the bridge. We are hoping for delivery and placement of the sections during mid-January.
This bridge will be the first of its kind in Logan County. Because the concrete sections were manufactured in a controlled environment, and with standardized components, it is guaranteed to meet American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications. It was also designed to meet specific criteria for where it will be placed. The bridge is more cost-effective than bidding out construction of a standard steel beam structure and requires less maintenance. Creek County has installed four of the structures and state DOT’s are using them extensively.
The old bridge was inadequate for handling the amount of water it was subject to during heavy rain. There were times water would actually go over the bridge. The new structure will have approximately the same rise as the old, but will be longer and able to accommodate a larger volume of water. We are considering the use of these precast structures throughout other areas of the district.
Thanks to all who participated in the solid waste cleanup program during October and November. We have not used the full amount of grant money allotted by the Association of County Commissioners of Oklahoma Solid Waste Program for dumpster roll offs, so we are extending the
service through February, 2013.
The dumpster is located at the county shop at 1550 N. Midwest Blvd. and is available to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mon. through Fri., except for holidays. If it is necessary to bring solid
waste to the dumpster on Saturday, appointments can be made by calling our office at 282-3405 or my cell phone at 650-0384. The dumpster is available for solid waste only. Items which will not be accepted include garbage (any kind of food or vegetation), hazardous materials, appliances containing Freon, and rubber tires and liquids.
