District Attorney Laura Austin Thomas has announced her bid for re-election. Three years ago Austin Thomas was elected by the people of Logan and Payne counties after receiving over 50 percent of the votes in a three-person primary race.
Austin Thomas, who has been a prosecutor and public servant for 34 years, said in an email, “I’ve spent my professional life speaking for and advocating for the rights of victims including children, the elderly and violent crime victims. I started in the prosecution of misdemeanor offenses and became accomplished in violent crime prosecution, juvenile deprived and delinquent actions and capital homicide. I then assumed the management and administration of the child support office, which at the time was maintained by the District Attorney’s office, turning it into one of the most productive and accomplished offices in the state of Oklahoma.”
The 2014 election made Austin Thomas the first female District Attorney to serve Logan and Payne counties.
Austin Thomas says she has focused on efficiency and performance of the offices.
In 2017, Thomas was selected to serve on the Oklahoma District Attorneys Association Board of Directors. She also serves on the Technology Committee as well as the Legislative Committee within the District Attorneys Council.
Austin Thomas received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Oklahoma State University in 1979. In 1981, she received her Master of Science in Corrections at OSU, with a focus in treatment of the offender and administration. She received her law degree in 1984 from the University of Oklahoma.
Married for 29 years to George Thomas, a wildlife biologist for the Bureau of Land Management, Austin Thomas has three daughters, Michelle, Darci and Alexandra.
