A Guthrie discount store may soon be selling booze.
Representatives of Dollar General, located on south Division, applied for a license this past week in Logan County to sell low-point beer. A hearing will be made inside the courthouse on Jan. 7.
Dollar General plans to phase in low-point beer sales at 88 percent of its Oklahoma stores.
The Goodlettsville, Tenn. based retailer has more than 10,600 stores is expected to put 3.2 ounce beer (state law) in over 300 of their Oklahoma stores.
According to a report, the retail chain views convenience and grocery stores as their primary competitors. After testing the beer, and in some locations wine, idea in 2010, Dollar General has added beer to more than 4,000 stores in 40 states.
“I really don’t have a problem with it,” one customer said. Another customer says, “I really don’t care. It is no different from a convenience store having beer.”
However, not all customers are excited about the possible beer stop.
“I’m against it. It’s supposed to be a family store and will not be good for children to be around it.”
