DPS: Fatality report for the month of August

Department of Public Safety officials report 58 fatalities in August 2013 compared to 65 in the same month last year.

Guthrie News PageDuring the month of August there were 12 motorcyclists and four pedestrians who died in traffic related crashes.  The highest daily fatality numbers include 12 deaths on Fridays, dropping to 11 on Saturdays.  There were six days in the month of August the Department of Public Safety reported no fatalities.

Five of the fatality crashes were alcohol-related. Forty-five of the fatality victims were Oklahoma residents and 13 nonresidents.  There were 37 male and 21 female victims.  

Eight of the  fatality victims were under the age of 20. The 31 – 40 year-old and the 41 – 50 year- old age group led the fatality count with eleven.

Oklahoma County led the state with a fatality count of seven, followed by Tulsa with five fatalities.
The highest number of fatalities occurred on State Highways with 14. There were 13 fatalities on City Streets.  

Sixty-five percent of those who died in traffic collisions were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash.
