Family of four escape burning home; high winds prove to be havoc

Multiple fire departments needed several minutes to extinguish a house fire, along with vehicles, late Tuesday night. A working smoke alarm allowed four people to escape the home.

Fire crews were called out to the 500 block of N. Buffalo Ave, located north of Douglas Blvd. off of Highway 105, at 10:30 p.m. Guthrie Fire Department was quickly on the scene and dispatched Sooner and Woodcrest fire departments for mutual assistance.

A Logan County deputy was first on the scene and reported the home to be fully involved. Firefighters were immediately in defense mode with winds blowing 30 mph and gusting over 40 mph. Along with the structure fire, firefighters protected several nearby homes as the fierce winds dangerously blew smoke and embers toward other residences.

A man inside the home heard the smoke alarm go off and quickly woke up a child, mother, girlfriend and collected two dogs and escaped the home. He says once they got outside the garage door was completely red with flames and when it fell off the flames took over.

It appeared firefighters had the fire knocked down on a few occasions, but the winds refueled the fire. Approximately 60 minutes later, firefighters had control of the fire.

In addition to completely losing the home, two vehicles parked in the driveway were destroyed while another took on damage.

Family members, along with firefighters, were seen carrying a few salvageable items out of the charred home.

A family member says the fire started in the garage before eventually moving up in the attic.

The Red Cross was called to the scene to help the family with assistance.

Fire departments remained on the scene until after 2 a.m.

There were no injuries reported.
