Department of Public Safety officials report 48 fatalities in October 2013 compared to 60 in the same month last year. During the month of October there were five motorcyclists and two pedestrians who died in traffic related crashes. The highest daily fatality numbers include 14 deaths on Thursdays, dropping to 10 on Fridays. There were eight days in the month of October the Department of Public Safety reported no fatalities.
Five of the fatality crashes were alcohol-related. Thirty-six of the fatality victims were Oklahoma residents and 12 nonresidents. There were 27 male and 19 female victims.
Six of the fatality victims were under the age of 20. The 21-30 year-old age group led the fatality count with ten.
Tulsa County led the state with a fatality count of ten, followed by Oklahoma County with four fatalities. The highest number of fatalities occurred on US Highways with 11. There were ten fatalities reported on State Highways, County Roads and City Streets.
Thirty-seven percent of those who died in traffic collisions were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash.
